braininnards:

Oedipus Rex, also known as Oedipus the King, is a Greek tragedy written by Sophocles about an abandoned son that eventually returns to kill his father, the King, and marries the Queen, his mother. Freud uses this tale as the namesake for his Oedipus complex theory. It states that a boy will compete with his father for his mother’s affection, and in fact will desire her sexually and subconsciously. For females, the equivalent is the Electra complex, although both theories, for the most part, are no longer viewed as valid.
